B&B and the Bowler
These days, you can’t think of Bradford & Bingley without thinking of bowler hats. But why?
Mr Bradford & Mr Bingley were the two bowler-hatted City gents who appeared in a popular ad campaign we ran in the 1970s – and since then the hat has even become part of our logo. Everybody always remembers the bowler – so our latest campaign features one specially made by J Locke, the London hat maker where the story started.
Although manufactured by Locke, the idea for the ‘bowler’ came from Lord Coke, who wanted a hat to protect his gamekeepers’ heads when riding. Such was their popularity that production was out sourced to William Bowler and the name stuck. The ‘bowler’ has been around since 1850... that’s just one year longer than we have. |
